Chinese EV Brands’ Push In Indonesia Intensifies. Can They Help Boost Slow Adoption?

Chinese-made electric vehicles like this Wuling Hongguang Mini EV in Jakarata are becoming more popular but Indonesia still lacks the necessary charging infrastructure to support widespread adoption.

The roads in Jakarta are looking a little different lately. At times, in the sea of black SUVs stuck in traffic, one can spot one or two tiny electric cars developed by Chinese electric vehicle maker Wuling. When one hops into a Blue Bird — the country’s most popular cab service — there is now a chance that they will be riding China’s BYD car.

At Indonesia’s largest auto show last week, many Chinese brands debuted their latest models under major spotlight. Neta, Haval and Ora were some of the Chinese brands to do so.
